The University of Bordeaux welcomes 56,000 students, of which almost 2,000 are PhD students and 7,200 (12%) are international students. 

Ranked among the top universities in France, the University of Bordeaux was one of the first universities to obtain confirmation of  the “Initiative of Excellence” label, awarded by the French government in recognition of its innovative training, research and knowledge transfer programs.

A multidisciplinary, international education offer

The University of Bordeaux offers 250 Master and 150 Bachelor programs. The four major scientific fields are: 

The university has developed a wide range of international study programs that are taught in English (or other languages) and that offer students the possibility of studying abroad and/or completing joint or double degrees. A leading university in France for participation in the Erasmus Mundus program, the University of Bordeaux offers around 20 EU-labeled study programs of excellence.

A leading, international research university

Research is multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and international, organized according to 11 departments: 

The university counts over 70 research laboratories that are under joint supervision with national research organizations. A Graduate Research School coordinates the entire field of doctoral studies in collaboration with the eight doctoral schools that ensure support and guidance for PhD students.  

Clusters of excellence

One of the main priorities of the University of Bordeaux is to promote the development of thematic clusters of excellence for research, training and knowledge transfer in the following fields: neuroscience, medical imaging, environment/climate, advanced materials, archaeology, lasers/optics, digital certification, health and society and cardiology.

Campus & student life

The University of Bordeaux has one of the largest campuses (187 hectares) in Europe. It is composed of several sites that are located near to the city and that offer a broad range of services and amenities.

A campus of excellence for sports as well, since 2010 the University of Bordeaux is the n°1 French university for sports, ranking n°5 within Europe. 

135 student associations exist, covering fields of study, as well as culture, sport, humanitarian topics, etc. Cultural workshops and events (festivals, science cafés, concerts, exhibitions, etc.) are regularly organized on the campus.

The Student Health Center ensures health services for the duration of student studies. It offers medical appointments, nursing services, immunization updates, as well as a variety of well-being workshops, etc.
