Edgar Cao & Jiang Xu (IDS-FunMat program)

Last update Tuesday 31 August 2021

I began my journey in the IDS-FunMat program in late 2012, after learning about this amazing opportunity when I completed my undergraduate studies at the University of Waterloo’s Nanotechnology Engineering Program. Fascinated by the prospect of expanding my horizons and trying to learn a new culture and language, I decided on the spirit of "why not". I have been extremely fortunate in being able to not only share my experiences, but also learn so much thanks to the IDS program and working closely between both Waterloo and Bordeaux institutions.

Participating in the IDS-FunMat program fundamentally changed my view on international collaborations and their importance in not just connecting different cultures and views, but providing an edge and understanding that no classroom tool could easily teach. The program provided me with the opportunity to advance upon the foundation I had made and help catapult me into situations I had not dreamt of. The program also helped me to develop my creative thinking, hone my adaptability skills, and improve and refine my soft skills, which have all benefited me in my postings afterwards.

Currently, I'm a senior engineer/expert working on quantum dot applications which, I can safely say that without my experiences at both Waterloo and Bordeaux during my doctoral studies, I would not have the extraordinary chance to work within this dynamic French company, Nexdot.

Providing my expertise in not just nanoscience and polymer chemistry, but contributing to projects with other field experts in different domains, ranging from biochemists, physicists, and inorganic chemists, the skills I learned from the IDS program are constantly demonstrated. The knowledge, training sessions, and colleagues/friends I have met thanks to this program have helped me to be able to thrive in an environment I never imagined I could tap into.

The IDS FUMAT was a truly unique and amazing joint program that set an example for international cooperation and education. It provided a multicultural immersive learning experience and diversified scientific collaboration opportunities. As a Ph.D. student, I was fortunate to work with colleagues from the University of Waterloo and University of Bordeaux and simultaneously receive suggestions from my industrial partner. The cotutelle degree education prepared me for a multidisciplinary research background and inspired me to pursue challenging topics. The four years with IDS FUNMAT are no doubt one of the most wonderful memories in my life. I highly recommend similar programs to future students who would like to pursue their studies with a global vision and passion.
